Bad times for Road Safety |
|
The situation of economic uncertainty that we are going to experience in Spain as a consequence of the COVID 19 pandemic , and which already shows worrying macroeconomic data, does not bode well in terms of improving Road Safety . Bad times for Road Safety Unfortunately, to begin with, we are one of the countries in the European Union that has the average age of its oldest vehicle fleet, around 14 years. At a time of contraction in consumption like the one that is approaching, many individuals, and also numerous companies, are going to postpone their purchasing decisions until they see how the dark clouds progress and clear. I'm not saying anything by saying that older vehicles equal less safety, more pollution and less energy efficiency.
A reduction in sales would mean serious problems for the maintenance of the Automobile industry in Spain, of strategic importance in our economy, which we must not forget will seek, as is logical and normal, the best options for its production among its different factories. A second determining factor C Level Contact List of this issue that I analyze is the state of conservation of our roads , whether state, regional or municipal ownership. We have already experienced similar situations in the not too distant past that brought drastic budget cuts and, as a consequence, minimal maintenance of road surfaces and signage.
Closing the circle with the third and last of the intervening factors, the human one, the situation can generate worse road training for new drivers , with fewer students in driving schools and fewer classes instead of more, which is recommended, and a reduction in companies' investment in mobility plans and safe driving training for their workers. Despite all of the above, being aware that I am describing a black landscape, we must be positive and think that we are going to get out of this because Spain is a great country and we Spaniards always show that we are fighting people. We have made great progress in improving and reducing traffic accidents and today we are a model to follow for many other countries.
